When the calendar page turns to February, Mistral audiences have long come to anticipate a concert where, along with chocolate hearts, they are treated to music that takes its inspiration from the endless facets of love.

This year it features works by three composers – Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, and the woman they both loved, Clara Weick Schumann – whose relationship has been called the greatest love triangle in the history of music. Both Brahms and Robert Schumann received endless creative inspiration from Clara, and the mutual love, respect, and admiration they felt for one another are well documented in hundreds of letters and diary entries that have survived.  Robert suffered from a variety of psychological illnesses, yet to be determined to this day. This concert will offer up Clara Schumann’s Piano Trio in G minor, Robert Schumann’s String Quartet No.1, and Johannes Brahms’ formidable masterpiece, the Piano Quintet in F minor. Short excerpts from their love letters will be read in between the chamber works.

Two of Mistral’s original members, husband and wife team, violinist Juliet Kang and cellist Tom Kraines, return to the Mistral stage for this annual Valentine concert. Kang, formerly with the Boston Symphony, now holds the Associate Concertmaster chair in the illustrious Philadelphia Orchestra, and Kraines is the cellist with the acclaimed Daedalus String Quartet. Joining them will be BSO violinist Jason Horowitz, Mistral favorite violist Stephanie Fong, artistic director, and flutist Julie Scolnik, and pianist Sophie Scolnik-Brower.
