Clear Flour Bread

Starting tomorrow, Clear Flour Bread, 178 Thorndike Street, will begin its third annual German Week at the popular bakery. Baked goods will vary depending on “the bakers’ whim” but will include Poppy Nusstorte (short dough with an almond, sugar, lemon, & rum filling), Bienenstich (sweet, yeasted cake with a layer of whipped cream, topped with honey & almonds—a personal favorite!), Apfelstreusel (short crust with a layer of apples, topped with an almond crumb), and of course, traditional soft German pretzels, with the option of adding mustard butter.

So, why German Week at a bread and pastry shop known for it’s flaky croissants and baguettes?

“We needed an excuse to make our favorite German breads and pastries more than just once a week or seasonally, like Christmas, “ said Clear Flour Bread General Manager Carrie F. Diana. “It’s about celebrating food and culture, and quite honestly who could resist the opportunity to eat a freshly baked Traditional Soft German Pretzel with mustard butter everyday of the week!”

Diana added that German week also exposes their baking staff to new products, shaping and baking techniques.

Other German specialties you might find on your German Week visit are German Sunflower Rolls and Sausage in a Blanket (made with Nurnberger sausages from Karl’s Sausage Kitchen.) Stein of Pilsner beer not included (but there’s TJ Convenience Store two doors down with a good beer selection should you be in the mood.)
