Brookline resident Larry Ruttman has enjoyed multiple success stories. He’s been married to the love of his life, Lois, for 57 years. A graduate of Boston College Law School, Ruttman’s career as a lawyer began in 1960. A sucker for giving time back to the community, Ruttman also hosted his own show on Brookline Access Television for 13 years. He is also a historian. In 2005, he self-published Voices of Brookline. Besides his wife Lois and Brookline, Ruttman has also enjoyed a nearly 90-year love affair with baseball. In 2013, the University of Nebraska Press published Ruttman’s book American Jews and America’s Game: Voices of a Growing Legacy in Baseball.
Today, BrooklineHub.com launches its “BrooklineHub In-Depth” YouTube channel with an interview with Larry Ruttman and Eddie Romero Jr. of the Boston Red Sox. Guest host Jordan Rich of WBZ-AM interviews Ruttman. Ruttman personally conducted his interview with Eddie Romero Jr. The program can also be seen on all Brookline Interactive Group’s Cable Channels beginning at 7 pm this evening.
This edition of the show is the brainchild of Joyce Graff of the Brookline Rotary, one of Brookline’s great non-profits that comprises practically a dream team of local philanthropists who work tirelessly for communities worldwide. The show features three Rotary PSAs produced by Graff.
Of all of Larry Ruttman’s attributes, perhaps his strongest is his ability to never stop growing as a person, even in his 91st year. Many would think an author of a book about baseball from the perspective of the Jewish experience would choose as his interview guest someone who could also speak to Jewish contributions to the game. Instead, Ruttman understood from his research that Jewish involvement in baseball couldn’t be told without understanding the immigrant experience, which comes with it overcoming racism and intolerance. This “BrooklineHub In-Depth” episode also features a Larry Ruttman interview of Eddie Romero Jr, executive vice president and assistant general manager with the Boston Red Sox.
Before taking his present position, Eddie Romero Jr. worked for the Red Sox as the assistant director of Latin American operations/international scouting. Romero speaks intimately about the experience immigrants from Central and Latin America make their way up the big leagues face today and how Romero has at times needed to use his experience as an attorney to help players from countries like the Dominican Republic overcome extortion and prejudice.
This edition of “BrooklineHub In-Depth” also includes a moving 2017 interview with Brookline’s Lesly and Mariano Suriel Guerrero talking about their family’s journey to the United States from the Dominican Republic. In 2011, Lesly Suriel Guerrero became the first Brookline Youth of the Year recipient after only living in Brookline for 2 years. Lesly’s brother Mariano was also honored in 2012 and her sister Kerimal in 2016. The Brookline Youth Awards Parent of the Year award is named after Altagracia Guerrero and Mariano Suriel. They came to this country with the clothes on their backs and the few suitcases they could carry, making the ultimate sacrifice for their children. The Suriel Guerreros are pillars of the Brookline community.
“BrooklineHub In-Depth” is produced by BrooklineHub.com publisher R. Harvey Bravman and Danielle Myers, a producer from Bravman’s for-profit company, ADW Video Productions.
“BrooklineHub In-Depth” can be seen on all Brookline Interactive Group cable channels and on the “BrooklineHub In-Depth” YouTube channel.
