Evil and terror have been pervasive themes in literature. Are there demons, devils, ghosts, possessions, horrible things that come to us from outside? In this course we’ll look at some examples of gothic works, reading and discussing such authors as Stephen King who recently revealed: “I am interested in frightening people; I just want to make your flesh creep” and perhaps Horatio Walpole, the so-called father of the gothic novel. Students will have the chance to help choose some of the readings in the first class. The instructor will try to ensure that all readings are available online.
