The Brookline Public Works Department has recently been awarded a prestigious American Public Works Association (APWA) Re-Accreditation. The APWA Accreditation and Re-Accreditation program recognizes public works agencies that go beyond the requirements of the management practices established nationally in the public works industry, as contained in the APWA Public Works Management Practices Manual. The Town of Brookline’s Public Works Department received its first Accreditation in August, 2011, as the first agency in Massachusetts and New England to do so. They were awarded Re-Accreditation on October 1, 2015.
Brookline’s Public Works Department’s Re-Accreditati0n indicates the department has met all applicable Accreditation documentation and practices over time. “The awarding of the APWA Re-Accreditation shows we have dedicated ourselves to concepts of improvement and in-depth self-assessment of department policies, procedures and practices. The heroes of this prestigious APWA award are the public works staff whose mission is to provide public works services and programs that contribute to making Brookline a great town,” said Public Works Commissioner Andrew M. Pappastergion.
The Public Works Department’s responsibilities include planning, designing, operating, maintaining and managing public ways, park lands, open space, public grounds, town cemeteries, water distribution systems, sewer collection systems, and the collection and disposal of solid waste. The department also provides engineering support services and motor equipment maintenance services to all town departments. The Department is comprised of five divisions; Public Works Administration, Engineering and Transportation, Highway and Sanitation, Parks and Open Spaces, and Water and Sewer.
For the Town of Brookline’s Public Works Department’s Re-Accreditation review, a team of public works professionals from Union Township, OH; Garden City, GA, and Kansas City, Missouri completed a thorough evaluation of operations during their September 10-11 site visit. “It’s great to have the Brookline Public Works Department reach full compliance with their practices for their Re-Accreditation. I commend their continued and renewed commitment to the detailed review of the agency’s policies and procedures to qualify,” said APWA Director of Accreditation, Ann Daniels.
