BROOKLINE, MA – Not a fan of the gooiest day of the year? Does the thought of stuffed bears, heart-shaped chocolate boxes, and overpriced roses make you want to stick someone with a thorn? Then come commiserate with others at Mortified Boston’s Doomed Valentine’s Day Show at the Coolidge Corner Theatre on Monday, February 13 at 7:30 pm.
This special love-gone-awry event will feature real adults sharing their most hilariously embarrassing diary entries, lyrics, poems, and artwork from their teenage years. One by one, brave men and women will take the stage to relive their tortured adolescence with cringe-worthy material about juvenile ardor gone wrong, from unrequited high-school crushes and tumultuous off-and-on-again romances to horrendous prom dates and awkward sexual firsts. Oh, the pain!
Tickets to Doomed Valentine’s Show are $15 general admission when purchased in advance, or $18 day of show. Tickets for Coolidge members and students are $12 any time. For more information and to buy tickets online, visit www.coolidge.org. Tickets are also available at the Coolidge Corner Theatre box office, 290 Harvard Street, Brookline.
Mortified is a comic excavation of teen angst artifacts offered up by their original authors for the amusement of total strangers. Part comedy, part theater, part therapy, Mortified’s grassroots stage shows have been hailed as a "cultural phenomenon" by Newsweek, and celebrated by the likes of The Today Show, The Onion AV Club, This American Life, and Entertainment Weekly.
The project began in the late 1990s when founder Dave Nadelberg unearthed a notably awkward love letter and began sharing it with friends. Formalizing as Mortified in 2002 with co-producer Neil Katcher, the project has since sifted through thousands of volumes of otherwise forgotten notebooks, photos, and envelopes in an effort to crack the lid off of our cultural shoebox and expose our inner geek. Mortified now has chapters in Boston, New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Austin, Portland, Washington, DC, and Malmö, Sweden. Mortified’s stage shows feature a wide range of people, including teachers, writers, soccer moms, architects, executives, students, comics, and actors, all in the noble pursuit of personal redemption through public humiliation.
In addition to its grassroots stage shows, Mortified has released two acclaimed books: Mortifed: Real Words, Real People, Real Pathetic and a romance-themed sequel. Mortified: Love is a Battlefield. The web-based Mortified Showbox Show features a mix of concert clips, animated shorts, archival media, and interviews. Also, every Monday at 8:00 pm, the Sundance Channel airs The Mortified Sessions, where celebrities share hilarious stories from their own awkward teenage years.
