How Close to a Reality is the Brookline Teen Center?

E-mail Print PDF

Tom Mendelsohn, BTC Interim Executive DirectorJust when the heck will the Teen Center open? Some people out there must think they have been hearing about this forever. Creating a Teen Center for a town as large as Brookline is a monumental task. Several individuals and small companies have worked diligently for over 5 years to make it happen. All these combined efforts have brought the BTC to the precipice of reality.

A little over a year ago, Teen Center Interim Executive Director, Tom Mendelsohn, agreed to accept a part time, contract position with the BTC. He has worked tirelessly since then to complete the last and most difficult leg of this epic journey.

Tom gave us some updates on where the project is today. “We are currently focused on completing the private leadership phase of a Capital Campaign. We have great momentum and believe we will break ground, hire staff, complete construction and open in 2012!” The BTC is supported entirely by private dollars. We are making good progress on the ‘quiet’ private leadership phase of the capital campaign, but still require some key capital gifts before we can announce groundbreaking and move into the construction phase. In addition to funding the construction and opening of the BTC, we will be raising a ‘sustainability fund’ to help fund operations, and will be supported by annual gifts, membership fees and other earned revenue after opening. “

As Tom put it, “The October 30 event was a friend- and fun-raiser, not a fundraiser. That said, if individuals would like to make a gift, they can visit our website at http://www.BrooklineTeenCenter.org to make a credit card gift through the Brookline Community Foundation. “Next year we plan to initiate a town-wide, public capital campaign. We will need every family in Brookline to pledge what it can over the next 3-5 years to help us build, open and sustain the Brookline Teen Center.”
